Going on 6 days in the hospital now, so I thought it was time for a little update. It turns out the last-minute surgery was a very good call. Had the intestines remained twisted for another 6-12 hours, they might have needed to be removed in pieces: a much more complex surgery with a greater risk for infection.
Since then, J has been steadily recovering. It hasn’t been easy, but there’s been good pain management and Jay has three teams of world-class surgeons (Dr. Sheinfeld, Dr. Bains & Dr. Paty) monitoring his every bodily function. There are much-lauded signs (that I won’t describe in detail) that things are starting to wake up again down there. It’s been about 8 days since J had any sort of nutrition, so we’re all really looking forward to the return of digestion. Almost as much as the return of warm weather.
We’re hoping Jay will be emancipated from all of the tubes that are tethering him down starting today. There’s the nasal-gastric tube, the catheter, the chest tube, the IV into his very worn out veins. It’s a lot, but he is braving on.
Also, Jay’s sister Kristin is here! She’s with him now and when she’s here, I don’t worry about Jay at all. I’m actually soaking up some spring sun in Central Park right now, such a treat!

Evening light, daffodils, light or no sweater, these are some of the bits that make for a Spring feeling. On Beekman Place, where the sound of the FDR drive at the back of the house is a constant – the City never sleeps – the noise at the front of the house in the early morning is the sound of birds singing.
So we are hoping that your news is good. It sure seems as though your team were smart to open you up again and fix the intestines, but I hope you are back to eating or at least drinking and that you’re regaining some strength.
We saw Liz on Monday night. She is writing a novel (she is a talented writer) and both betty and I had comments and suggestions which she is very receptive to. Great evening. She is really on a roll, which is wonderful considering how tough it has been for her.

Jay ( and his loved ones!) are certainly being put through the wringer…he will be so much more comfortable with those tubes out! He probably cannot wait. Am glad that things are improving
